Nowadays, English is playing a very important role in the global development. Therefore, the teaching of English has been improved in method of the communicative, learner-centered approach which is adaptable to give students many opportunities to communicate in English.

In order to catch up with the trend of global integration, the education sector  in Vietnam is increasingly integrating with the world. Understanding clearly the importance of modern education is the training of these people can keep up with the trend of global integration. Foreign Language in general, English in particular is an effective tool for integration process. The Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training has are constantly improving the quality of foreign teaching and learning through comprehensive innovation.

Foreign language teaching and learning scheme that Ministry of  Education and Training has submitted to the Government to renew the entire system foreign language teaching system from past to present, from chapter course, textbooks, teaching and testing methods, assess to ensure sufficient teachers and facilities quality for teaching and learning foreign languages ​​… Teaching foreign languages ​​will starting grade 1, 2 with 2 periods per week and grade 3,4,5 with 4 periods per week. To meet for this innovation and true realization of that scheme, The Ministry of Education and Training’s renovation of foreign language teaching has set out the requirements that teachers need to have their own innovation in teaching.

As a result, it is necessary for our teachers to study some strategies to help students at primary school to learn  English effectively in class or out of class so that they can communicate in real life.

These are some the advantages and the disadvantages of  learning and teaching English at primary school:

1)Advantages :

– The Headmaster always supports and helps the teachers with physical materials.

– Some students are interested in learning English.

– Teachers are always enthusiastic in teaching.

– Getting much valuable experience from colleagues and reference books.

2)Disadvantages :

– Students’ capacity is much limited and of different levels. Some of them are quite deficient in the base of learning English.

– Some students pronounce habitually wrongly.

– Students are lacking in vocabulary and modal sentences.

– The majority of students are lacking in self – confidence to present ideas, perform sentences before the others.

For primary school children to learn English well and it is important to be able to use them to develop good English communication skills in all grades after that. We need to understand the child’s psychology before applying it a new teaching method. Young primary school students are still eager playing, eating, sleeping, playing. Based on psychology this kid’s, let’s make them see learning English like a fun game in other words that has fun in learning and teaching English.

Here are some STRATEGIES  to help students at primary school learn English effectively.

  1. Student-centered.

Look at the developed countries, the way of teaching is oriented  “learner-centered” method has been applied for a long time. With this method, the learner will be a self-confessed person breaking knowledge, teachers are only instructors and architects information level. Questions arise in the process learning  by students, teachers only play a role act as “referee”, do “counselor”. The role of the teacher at to guide, inspire, and inspire learners.

To be an instructor, a informant believe… the teachers must have a deep understanding of these basic knowledge in charge, at the same time must be self-sufficient. Regularly and deliberately replenish your knowledge clear direction through documents, books and newspapers.

Under the guidance of the teachers,  the student will have to more active, more self-conscious in participating in learning, apply and learn new knowledge. Each student will must find the optimal learning method for themselves, must be independent using materials suggested and prepared by the teacher work, from which the independence and creativity will be promoted more and more.

  1. Promote group discussion method.

Teacher-led group study is a new way of teaching which some primary schools have taken the lead in Vietnam and group study method is very active. Children were classified into small groups of 3 up to 5 children discuss a small problem with their studies English subjects or children can be couples, children can exchange freely topic that the teacher has just given. End of discussion, children submit reproduced in English, of course with the child’s ability.

Example: The teacher gives a topic: groups write about each other English words for classroom supplies, or parts on the human body, the animals I love in English.

Groups compete to see who can write more and for them the group read their results aloud. The groups then listen and comment on the group’s reading just presented. Teacher just the one who encourages children’s participation and refinement

Their shortcomings should not be judged from right to wrong clear. During group discussion, teachers avoid  criticizing the child in front of a group of friends, embarrassing  him or her next time join.

 

  1. Help students be more comfortable during school hours.

In other words to help children enjoy learning, by attracting children with interesting stories. Teacheroften read English stories that children like to let children hear. that song. The song should be short, easy to remember and explain Vietnamese for children to understand. Teaching children to sing and listen to songs which can help students improve their listening skills. Integrating these English songs in music lessons are very practical. Helping children to hear English well as mentioned above is the need for a combination of teachers, between teachers and students, between home and school and in great need the leaders’ help in bold innovation teaching methods in English subjects.

  1. Combine the school and home tightly.

There are some ways which can help parents remind their children to practice language :

– Computer games like English word matching help children are familiar with writing, reading vocabulary, and simple sentences especially listening to the pronunciation of that vocabulary. This is a good way to help children passionately learn English from listening – reading – writing and sentence building, a way of learning that simultaneously completes skills for children.

– Watch cartoon English pronunciation but subtitles Vietnamese. This is a very attractive method for children of primary age Study, the better the effect is when it’s a hot movie children are in love. Children are very attentive listening to understand intonation the character’s feelings, at the same time will be very attentive in reading the word to understand the meaning. This can be seen as a bonus tiers parents reward their students for learning English after a week of learning English get serious, get good results and make good progress or get good grades.

  1. Apply information technology to language teaching.
